hiker dead on Mt Rainier

We climbed Mt. Adams in the Cascades in beautiful weather. But our guide Matt insisted we haul survival gear up to the summit including parkas, emergency sleeping bag, stove, fuel.
On the descent Matt suggested a future trip up to Camp Muir on Rainier. No doubt he’d insist we carry survival gear yet again.
Here’s why …

WCT 19hr 13min

What did you do Saturday?
Wanetta Beal ran the West Coast Trail in 19 hours and 13 minutes.
As far as she and Parks Canada staff know, she’s the first woman to do the 75-kilometre route in less than 24 hours — instead of the usual six days.

evidence – FARTs on summit

Less than half the “rookies“ make it to the top of Mt. Adams in Washington State. But the highly trained FARTs did.

Thanks Matt for getting us to the summit safely.

Iron Mom in Primal Quest

Jeni has been showing everyone the Wall Street Journal article on Iron Mom, Kathy Roche-Wallace, a 47-year-old mother of six who finished the most recent Primal Quest in 10 days and one hour. The winners finished in five days and 11 hours.

Imagine doing an Ironman triathlon at extreme elevations, everyday for 10 days straight. That’s [...]

A good week of training, and now, off to climb a mountain!

Since our Lakeview trip last Sunday, we’ve had  pretty good week of training! It’s great having Rick here as a training partner, and Jeni was back (yay!) as of Tuesday, at least for three days.
Monday, Rick and Dave staged an impromptu “Duathlon” race… actually, Dave was planning on a gentle, semi-easy “bike-run-bike” as a recovery [...]

Tahoe Rim Trail in September

Rick will do a 50mi hike just prior to Big Blue in Tahoe starting Sept. 22nd. The route is marked in red.

Should be ideal for acclimatization to altitude … as well as a general “toughening up” taper.

To Lakeview… AND back!

For your reading pleasure, this will be Dave and Rick’s first ever “joint” post, as we combine Dave’s prose, and Rick’s photos and insightful comments! It is Day 3 of the Olympics, and to show our solidarity and commitment, today we undertook what even George didn’t… the ride to Lakeview and back… 42 miles round [...]
