I just got off the phone with Peggy Gaudet, the amazing young woman who is running the “Marathon of the Sands” (Marathon des Sable) in Morocco next week!
She was great to talk to on the phone, and I hope we’ll get a chance to meet her and hear her stories after she gets back. She’s also interested in AR, so I hope she may want to join us either for some training, or even to race.
We talked a bit about her training, and she figures most of hers out by hours, doing between 1.5 and 5 hours per day in preparation. She said one of the main things she learned was how to walk in her running, allowing her to go further (and ultimately faster!) while conserving energy. Interesting, especially for the 24 hour and 3 day races… I think we have a lot we can learn from her!
She leaves next Sunday for Morocco. I can’t wait to see the DVD of the race… apparently the fellow I mentioned, Lahcen Ahansel is not racing this year, but his brother Mohammed is… he’s only won once so far… Peggy says she’s seen the DVD of these guys, and they just fly over the sand! Lahcen did the 50 mile leg in something less than eight hours, carrying a pack, through the sand! Amazing!
It was inspiraional to hear her talk about it, and I know for sure I’ll be following her progress on www.darbaroud.com!
Go Peggy! North Idaho visits Morocco!
